Female tradition
Since more than 130 years women have played a major role on the estate of Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch – today in the 4th and 5th generation.
Sofia Thanisch runs the winery with her daughter, Christina. The family winery is now in its 11th and 12th generations, and its fourth and fifth female generations.
Before that, from 1970 to 1996, Mechthild Thanisch managed the winery that belonged to her and her sister Helga, the mother of Sofia.
Her mother, Sofie, married Victor Thanisch in 1920, with whom she ran the traditional winery together. After his death in 1952 she ran the winery with her daughter Mechthild until her death.
The female tradition began with Katharina Thanisch. She was the wife of Dr. Hugo Thanisch. When he died in 1895 at the age of only 42, she was just 30 years old and had three young children. The name “Wwe. (widow) Dr. H. Thanisch” goes back to Katharina Thanisch.
