140 Years Villa Thanisch Wine Event 07. September

Villa Thanisch has been the manor house of our winery for five generations now and is an important architectural monument of the Moselle in Kues.

The villa was built by our great, or great-great-grandfather Dr Hugo Thanisch and his wife Katharina, planned by the Frankfurt architect Heinrich Theodor Schmidt, who a year later extended Lieser Castle on behalf of the von Schorlemer family. Schmidt had planned important public buildings in Frankfurt and was involved in the restoration of Eltz Castle. By commissioning this well-known architect, Mr and Mrs Thanisch undoubtedly made a statement and underlined the importance of their Doctor winery.

In its 140-year history, the villa has experienced the chequered history of the past century with two world wars, which did not leave the Moselle valley untouched. In 1919, the villa was confiscated for several years and became the seat of the French military command, and our grandparents had to move out. During the Second World War, the villa was largely spared from the fighting as the Americans advanced from Lieser to Kues, but was again confiscated and became the seat of the French gendarmerie.

Find out more about the chequered history of this building during a turbulent time! We cordially invite you to our winery for our Wine festival:
