93 points for our 2017 Badstube Riesling Kabinet

In the Falstaff Riesling Trophy 2019, a competition of “falstaff”, the international magazine for food, drink and travel, our 2017 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett received an award and 93 points.

Editor-in-Chief Ulrich Sauter described the wine as follows:

“Spicy fragrance, slate and a whole oriental spice market, curry, fenugreek, pepper. On the palate with the cabinet-typical tension arch, but also with wealth (aromas, extract), and even with a layer of suppleness. The penetrating tactile minerality makes you almost forget that sweetness and acidity are also involved.”

Vintage report 2018

2018 began like the previous year with a picture book spring. But while 2017 hopes for good yields were dashed by night frost during flowering, such unpleasant weather capers fortunately failed to materialize this year. The warm spring was followed by midsummer with many hours of sunshine and high temperatures, so that the vegetation developed well ahead of the long-term average, indicating an early reading date. Only the persistent drought caused problems for the vines. However, only younger plants had to be watered, while the older vines in our Großlagen with their roots up to twelve meters deep could reach sufficient water reserves in the soil.
We had informed our well-rehearsed harvesting team about the development of the grapes at an early stage, so that we could start harvesting on 17 September, coordinated by plant manager Olaf Kaufmann and Christina, the daughter of Sofia Thanisch. As early as never before according to our records.
In doing so, we strictly oriented ourselves to the ripeness level, whereby the usual reading stress soon gave way to a more relaxed process, as the harvest was not interrupted by rain except for one day. Because the warm and sunny September merged seamlessly into a golden October, which with record temperatures of up to 27 ° Celsius made the activities in our Moselle steep slopes a sweat-inducing activity, which demanded a lot from our efficient reading team.
In the last 2 weeks we dedicated ourselves to our top sites, the Bernkasteler Lay, the Bernkasteler Graben and the Berncasteler Doctor, where our experienced female employees “piddled” to select noble rotten grapes for Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese.
On the 17th of October all the vineyards were harvested and our team returned to the winery tired but proud with colourfully decorated wagons to bring the last grapes to the press. There is still a summary to draw, which is easy this year: We are very satisfied with the 2018 harvest, both in terms of quality and quantity. The ripe as well as healthy grapes, the high Oechsle degrees and an acidity that is still well perceptible despite the warm weather give hope for attractive and exciting Mosel Rieslings.

Honorable visitor

Prime Minister Malu Dreyer visited us

“Strong women” – this was the motto of a visit by the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate Malu Dreyer to the VDP -Estate Wwe. Dr. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch in July 2018. She was welcomed by Sofia Thanisch, her daughter Christina, female employees of the winery and the mayor of Bernkastel-Kues Wolfgang Port.
With her visit, the Prime Minister pointed out the importance of women in the world of work who not only “stand their ground” , but also assume leadership responsibility. Sofia Thanisch presented the Riesling Estate, which has been run by her family for more than 380 years and eleven generations and in which women have been in charge for the last four generations. At present, the 5th female generation is preparing to continue the winery. 26-year-old Christina
studied wine economics in Geisenheim and gained experience in Germany and abroad.

Using the example of the “Berncasteler Doctor”, the world-famous vineyard, Sofia Thanisch informed about the hard work in the steep slopes of the Moselle vineyards, where the use of machinery is hardly possible.
In view of many crises and the threat of trade wars, she recommended to politicians to follow the example of first German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, who repeatedly presented Berncasteler Doctor wines as gifts during his state visits. This would create a positive atmosphere for talks and avoid conflicts. Prime Minister Malu Dreyer was open to taking up this suggestion.
